Financing solidarity: building an alternative financial system
Amélie Artis
Chapter 6 in A Modern Guide to the Social and Solidarity Economy, 2026, pp 114-137 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter investigates the solidarity finance sector as an alternative financial system that functions both alongside and separately from the conventional financial sector. The solidarity finance sector is made up of a wide range of financial institutions providing several types of financing (loans, investments, etc.). Beyond this diversity, these institutions offer a different approach to finance. The chapter begins with an elucidation of the persistence of alternative modes of credit allocation, as contrasted with the role of banking institutions. It then proceeds to delineate the heterogeneous composition of the sector, while underscoring the uniformity of its operational principles. It subsequently elucidates the impact of these institutions on the landscape of finance and access to it, before concluding with a critical appraisal of the challenges.
