Internationalization of social and solidarity economy organizations

Anjel Errasti, Ignacio Bretos and Carmen Marcuello

Chapter 8 in A Modern Guide to the Social and Solidarity Economy, 2026, pp 161-187 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the internationalization of social and solidarity economy organizations (SSEOs) within the context of an increasingly globalized market economy. It examines both the opportunities and challenges these organizations face when expanding beyond national borders. The study differentiates between general-interest and mutual-interest SSEOs, analyzing their distinct motivations and pathways for global expansion. It also considers the implications of different internationalization strategies, from altruism-based and hybrid approaches to control-based models. Drawing on relevant theories and case studies, it highlights how internationalization can contribute to the sustainability and growth of SSEOs while also posing risks to their social mission and democratic governance. In this context, the chapter explores how these organizations develop international scaling strategies, addressing key challenges such as isomorphism, mission drift, degeneration, and regeneration. By examining these dynamics, the chapter sheds light on how SSEOs navigate globalization while maintaining their social values and cooperative principles.
