Abstract:
Chapter 11 concludes the book. Key messages include: 1) the Chinese city has been an active agent in China's institutional swirl. It is owned and managed by the Chinese Communist Party and its government, creating a new breed of cities distinct from both past Chinese cities and other cities worldwide; 2) institutions and culture shape the Chinese city by defining key roles and relationships, facilitating the implementation of national development strategies through step-by-step bureaucracy, leapfrog intervention and large-scale trendy movements – fengchao. The overreaching effects are an indispensable part of policy implementation and the fengchao processes; 3) personal differences among top communist leaders and the contradictions between long-term communist goals and the immediate needs of society are root causes of the Chinese style of urbanisation, characterised by policy twists and turns; and 4) the institutional and cultural perspective can address questions about sustainability and transferability related to the Chinese city, opening a window for future research.
