Commodity certification and cultural valorization in global markets

Joana Nascimento

Chapter 2 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Economic Anthropology, 2025, pp 142-146 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Recent developments in cultural research have foregrounded how discussions about ‘heritage’ have spread globally, sparking intense debates about the ‘value’ of cultural forms, practices and products – in academia and beyond. In this context, forms of commodity certification centered on the ‘heritage value’ of particular products and industries emerge as intriguing examples of cultural valorization, complicating earlier debates focused on potential contradictions between ‘cultural value’ and ‘economic value’ in heritage practices. In this entry, I propose drawing on the concept of ‘valorization’ to examine how different kinds of value can emerge (and coexist) in the production and certification of certain commodities. Drawing on my own ethnographic research in the Harris Tweed industry – an extremely localized, trademark-protected ‘heritage industry’ with a global reach – I consider how a focus on ‘valorization’ can illuminate the diverse practices, actors and moral understandings involved in the recognition, protection and promotion of industries identified as culturally significant.
