Responsible (research and) innovation
Jonathan P. Hankins
Chapter 5 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Economic Anthropology, 2025, pp 157-161 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The ethical dimensions of care and stewardship are often missing from discussions of technological innovation. This entry compares the diverse frameworks in which responsible research and innovation have been introduced in interdisciplinary debate building on social studies of science and technology, the anthropology of science and organizations, and the sociology of innovation. The concept emerged from theories of apprenticeship and small-scale design and innovation, and it is currently embedded in the EU agenda on RRI (Responsible Research and Innovation) but under different auspices. Economic anthropologists are hereby reminded that taking into account the institutional discourse through which futuring is articulated plays an important part of how processes of governance and brokerage actually shape societies.
