The unexplained part of the gender wage gap
.
Chapter 4 in Explaining the Gender Wage Gap, 2023, pp 80-102 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 4 considers the unexplained part of the gender wage gap in two stages. It first examines overlooked factors and then considers discrimination against women in the labour market. The overlooked factors are risk aversion, competitiveness and negotiation process, stereotype threat, professional availability, values sought at work, and profamily orientation. Accounting for these factors suggests that the unexplained part of the wage gap is a result not only (or not at all) of discrimination but of different psychological profiles and preferences. Additionally, the chapter discusses how employers’ unequal treatment of the genders in competitive conditions is minimised in the long run and how legislation regulating women’s work (especially maternity-leave regulations) could discourage employers from employing them.
