Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the corporate governance issues specific to Chinese family businesses, primarily due to the intersection of family and firm interests. The discussion begins by exploring the historical evolution of Chinese family businesses and their prominent role in the Chinese economy. It then highlights three key aspects of corporate governance in these businesses as identified in the existing literature. The chapter also examines the contrasts in corporate governance between Chinese and Western businesses, emphasizing cultural and institutional differences. Additionally, it addresses the unique challenges and significant opportunities facing Chinese family businesses. The chapter concludes by proposing potential research directions to enhance our comprehension of corporate governance in this context.
