Chapter 24 in Research Handbook on Corporate Governance in China, 2025, pp 489-506 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This article examines corporate governance in China and highlights the role of the state. We elaborate on three areas: state ownership and control, the growth and role of party cells in organizations, and the array of industrial policies. Our analysis is couched in the context of China's cultural and political history. We suggest that future research should assess the impact of state control, the effectiveness of industrial policies, and the blurred lines between the public and private sectors.
