How to run a field experiment

Anya Samek and Sally Sadoff

Chapter 2 in Handbook of Experimental Methods in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 81-104 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides an introduction to how to run a field experiment. We include a high-level overview of how field experiments can benefit economics, both for theory-testing and for program evaluation. We next discuss how experiments can be characterized and structured. Specifically, we consider how to structure a field experiment in collaboration with a field partner. We also provide a step-by-step guide for how to carry out a field experiment. We pay special attention to issues of ethics and Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval as they relate to field experiments and obtaining informed consent.
