Measuring (dis)honesty
Marta Serra-Garcia
Chapter 8 in Handbook of Experimental Methods in the Social Sciences, 2026, pp 320-340 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter reviews experimental approaches to studying dishonesty. It examines three types of environments in which dishonesty has been studied: (1) lying to others, analyzing experimental paradigms such as sender-receiver games and die-roll tasks to understand when and why individuals choose to lie to others; (2) lying to oneself, reviewing experiments on self-deception and the key design choices critical for identifying this phenomenon; and (3) detecting deception, describing experiments that measure individuals’ ability to identify lies told by others using different paradigms. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of controlled and simple experimental designs in uncovering the psychological and strategic foundations of dishonesty.
