Famine - failed food security

.

Chapter 2 in Food Security, 2023, pp 14-25 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Famines represent a complete failure to provide food security. The ways in which famines come about are laid out in detail, pointing out that lack of food being available is only the first stage of a famine. The resources (especially of the poor) are quickly exhausted in attempts to secure food as prices typically rise. Once personal/family resources are exhausted food cannot be acquired even if it becomes available. Further, obtaining agricultural inputs by farmers is challenging, thus endangering food supplies in future years and likely prolonging a famine. Policies that can reduce the risk of famines occurring are discussed.
