Local - the myth of self-sufficiency

.

Chapter 4 in Food Security, 2023, pp 38-47 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Why achieving the goal of self-sufficiency does not equate to achieving food security is outlined and illustrated using examples from recent history. The case is made for how being self-sufficient increases vulnerability to shocks to food availability - drought, floods, pests, frost, etc., which cannot be prevented. There may be many good reasons for wishing to ‘eat local’, but food security is not one of them.
