Gender subtexts and personhood
.
Chapter 5 in Religious-Spiritual Diversity in Organisations, 2024, pp 83-99 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
“Gender subtexts and personhood” concerns personhood and how issues of gender and sexuality impacts society both traditionally and religiously. Religiously founded symbols can be manipulated for gender identity, despite religion’s push towards preserving the status quo. Gender is central to the religious and culture wars of the twenty-first century, and we often noted the impact of gendered dress codes like turbans and hijabs. This chapter examines hegemony, how it is challenged, how society changes, and the role of business in it. The place of women in religious leadership in mosques, temples, churches, and synagogues, and female empowerment in changing gender roles to create a pathway for effective HIV/AIDS treatment is also discussed. Finally, we ask readers to reflect on the ways they could influence gender and sexual preference discrimination in their business and make affirming decisions for those most often disempowered by majority consensus.
