Chapter 6 in Religious-Spiritual Diversity in Organisations, 2024, pp 100-120 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Human rights and the law, scrutinises human rights and the role of government and legislation in rights, tracking the impact of legislation on business. Starting with the United Nations, we surveyed various rights, particularly the importance of rights around religious freedom. We noted the nation state basis of those rights and how governments might manipulate religious freedoms for political advantage. Noting religious hegemony is still globally very common, we suggested how businesses could provide safe ways to facilitate minority religious expression, noting boundaries between free speech, offensive speech, and hate speech in relation to religion. We suggested some historical models that might inform business in establishing the rights of minority religious groups in their workforce to produce a spiritually safe workplace, concluding by asking readers to reflect on how their organisation encourages equitable religious human rights at work and how that might be further improved.
