The Regime of Credit-Money and its Current Transition
Robert Guttmann
Chapter 7 in Money and Production, 2024, pp 141-165 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The article discusses the institutional regulation of money and credit in the post-war US. Special emphasis is given to the analysis of recent changes in this area of economic policy. The intensification of financial instability in the wake of accelerating inflation during the 1970s has been followed by important policy reforms in the early 1980s. These include more extensive use of ‘lender of last resort’ interventions and a major overhaul of financial regulations. Those measures are part of an ongoing transformation of our financial system. The completion of this process requires further stabilization steps.
