Adopting the idealistic stance for addressing grand challenges: grounding and stretching

Etiënne Rouwette and Bareerah Hafeez Hoorani

Chapter 12 in Methodology to Address Grand Challenges, 2026, pp 283-302 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter shows how researchers can adopt the idealistic stance to address grand challenges by being open to different methodologies. Methodological pluralism is showcased by providing further granularity on the different regional contexts, data sources, intervention and analysis methods and participation, as well as the domain results and methodological challenges encountered in the different chapters. Through reflection, this chapter provides further nuance on what is a grand challenge and what is the role of methodologies when addressing grand challenges.
