Abstract:
In this chapter, two different participatory and adaptive approaches were implemented on two case studies (in Bangkok and The Hague) to address the uncertainties associated with transitioning toward a more sustainable transport system. In the case of Bangkok (Thailand), group model building, a participative approach to formulating system dynamic models, is applied to produce a qualitative model that represents a shared understanding of the stakeholders involved in the city's car-sharing system. For The Hague (Netherlands), a generative and robust visioning process, a participative framework to formulate a vision and a pathway towards a desirable future, is applied to a transport system in an area of the city. Methodological reflections are provided to evaluate the value of multi-actor participative interventions in tackling the grand challenge of urban mobility and how effective the methods are in addressing uncertainties in the decision-making process.
