Chapter 2 in Research Handbook on Leadership in Social Work and Social Care, 2025, pp 21-36 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Leadership is supposed to influence the way in which social care services are delivered to service users. But what is the evidence that good leadership makes a difference to the quality of care? Whilst there is good evidence that leadership competencies have a positive impact on multi-professional and intersectoral work, there is less research around the impact leadership may have on the outcome and quality of care delivered to service users. The chapter surveys the evidence indicating any empirical or conceptual link between leadership behaviours, leadership skills, and styles and care outcomes. We draw on the findings of a scoping review in this field and make recommendations for future research in this underexplored field in the social care sector.
