Abstract:
A scoping review conducted by Fennell (2021) identified a significant body of research dedicated to healthcare leadership but equally a scarcity of empirical research on the design and delivery of leadership education for the human/social care sector. Recognizing that more is needed in this space, we examine the educational efforts in the health sector to identify the potential synergies and opportunities for interprofessional development and education to inform development in the human service/social care sector. This chapter contributes to the ongoing discussion concerning the similarities and differences between leadership education in the health and human/social care sectors. We argue that the human/social care sector needs leaders who can work collaboratively within and across the service system to address issues of mutual concern and encourage others to bring about change. Leaders are encouraged to engage in activities such as critical reflection on experience, coaching, mentoring, observing others, and supported learning.
