Chapter 25 in Research Handbook on Leadership in Social Work and Social Care, 2025, pp 320-333 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapter focuses on social work-related staff experiences, challenges, and opportunities in academia. The authors draw insights for leadership in various facets of social work from the context of academia at a predominantly Black institution in the United States. Crenshaw's intersectionality theory and Yosso's theory of community cultural wealth provide the conceptual framework for exploring an analysis of the Council on Social Work Education's (CSWE) commitment to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) competency-based education. Strengths and strategies are discussed as an inherent approach to supporting Black social work leaders to pursue and embrace leadership. Informed practices and lessons learned from a supportive Lifting as We Climb and Community Care writing circle are highlighted. The chapter concludes with a call to action for the social work profession to develop leadership.
