Abstract:
This study explores the inherent dualities faced by leaders in the social care sector, emphasizing the complex interplay between their professional and managerial roles. Drawing on unstructured narrative interviews with social care leaders in Hungary, the research investigates how these leaders balance the dual expectations of maintaining professional expertise while fulfilling managerial duties. Through content analysis, several key dualities beyond hybrid leadership roles were identified, including the tensions derived from different stakeholder expectations. The study highlights the strategies and principles leaders employ to navigate these dualities. The findings contribute to understanding the unique challenges in social care leadership, offering insights into effective hybrid leadership practices. The research concludes with the formulation of a credo for social care leaders, encapsulating the core values and principles necessary for balancing their dual roles and fostering effective leadership within the social sector.
