Chapter 9 in Research Handbook on Leadership in Social Work and Social Care, 2025, pp 113-126 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the role of the Independent Chair of Safeguarding Adults Boards (SABs), which were made statutory under the Care Act 2014 in England, as an example of cross-sector system leadership in adult social care. It reflects on the different styles of leadership most suitable for SAB Chairs to support effective partnership working and deliver the duties and responsibilities of SABs. The key components of effective SAB leadership are outlined and described as ‘literacies’ because they can be developed, learnt, and acquired continuously in the role.
