Chapter 10 in Digital Globalization of Creative Industries, 2025, pp 174-190 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Digital transitions and new online platforms have provided business model innovations and created disruptions in creative industries and music industries. Digital change comes with both opportunities and challenges when it comes to sourcing and supporting creative talent in the global music industry. This chapter builds on our work with CreaTeME, a newly established Center of Excellence in the creative use of technology in music education. Here, we analyze the skills needed for artists and songwriters to succeed and prosper in a rapidly changing global music industry by analyzing the case of popular music programs at the University of Agder, in Kristiansand, Norway. The findings of the paper will contribute to the assessment of music educational programs and help to better understand digital change through the lens of the labor market and the implications within the education system.
