Elif Surer

Chapter 11 in Digital Globalization of Creative Industries, 2025, pp 191-203 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The video gaming industry, technology, and game research have disrupted entertainment and content creation, thanks to advancements in hardware, social platforms such as Steam, successful use cases for serious games (Kermavnar et al., 2023), and algorithms in artificial and computational intelligence. Extended Reality (XR), a general term combining virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality environments, has added a new layer to these recent advancements in the gaming industry, with a tremendous impact on user interaction, social gaming, and collaboration. XR covers a spectrum of digital realities from the completely virtual to the real world with three-dimensional virtual aspects, and the requirements of each environment regarding immersion, realism, and usability demand great effort and have large implications for content generation and consumption. This chapter provides an overview of the developments in the video gaming industry, emphasizing the influence of gaming platforms, XR technologies, and home entertainment facilities and how these recent advancements have disrupted related service industries, content creation, and consumption. This study provides an introduction to the essential domains and concepts that have been crucial during the digital transformation of the gaming industry, with an emphasis on the XR environments focusing on recent technological, societal, and computational advancements and updates.
