Does the emperor still wear clothes? An investigation into how AI has impacted the fashion industry

Petra Bouvain

Chapter 3 in Digital Globalization of Creative Industries, 2025, pp 36-54 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: AI has led to broad changes in all aspects of the fashion industry, ranging from the conception (design and forecasting stage) to production improvements, logistics, and marketing considerations. AI has also facilitated the implementation of sustainability into the fashion cycle. This chapter explores all these aspects and endeavours to provide an overview of the impacts on design, production, distribution, marketing, and sustainability and explores the rise of virtual fashion. AI has changed, and is predicted to continue changing, these processes with the anticipation of higher profits for fashion manufacturers and retailers, as well as increased satisfaction of customers, and may lead to better sustainability outcomes. However, there are also concerns about whether AI is used responsibly and the possible unwanted effects on privacy.
