Researcher-made drawings and researching sensitive topics
Baldwin Van Gorp
Chapter 11 in Handbook of Sensitive Research in the Social Sciences, 2025, pp 159-173 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter, it is suggested that researcher-made drawings be used as a complementary approach to other strategies in sensitive research. It explores the challenges of conducting qualitative research on sensitive subjects involving vulnerable groups. These groups are often ‘hard to reach,’ and establishing mutual trust is vital for meaningful engagement. Researchers may also feel threatened or biased, necessitating methods that protect both participants and researchers. The chapter addresses the utility of researcher-made drawings in researching sensitive topics, offering insights into working with such drawings and providing illustrative examples from the author's research. Future research avenues in the realm of sensitive research and vulnerable groups are outlined.
