Using visual research methods for research with chronically ill children

Abstract: This chapter discusses the use of the ‘draw, write and tell’ technique as an elicitation tool to understand how children make sense of chronic illness. Given the scarcity of studies on the topic, it is considered important to promote reflection on the application of this data collection instrument among a vulnerable population to address sensitive topics. Owing to its flexible and interactive nature, this methodological tool allows children to tell their stories in their own way. Furthermore, it is a methodological strategy that allows different forms of expression to be articulated, contributing to a better understanding of the thoughts, emotions and feelings of children even when they are not fully able to verbalise them. However, the ‘draw, write and tell’ also has limitations, such as the subjectivity of the drawings and the difficulty that the researcher has in controlling the environment where the technique is applied.
