Ethical issues in participatory research with grieving children
Miriam Sitter
Chapter 16 in Handbook of Sensitive Research in the Social Sciences, 2025, pp 221-235 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the importance of participatory research with grieving children. Ethical aspects come to the fore, as collaborative research on existential issues always raises the fundamental question of whether children are too young for this. At the same time, this question points to the latent intergenerational relations of care and power that potentially conflict with the demands of both children's rights and research on childhood bereavement's claim to inform children about all issues that affect them and to provide them with sufficient opportunities to process them independently. With reference to childhood studies, the chapter looks at how participatory research with grieving children can re-examine generational differences and how intergenerational forbearance contributes to allowing them to express their issues, concerns, questions and needs. Participatory research that recognises ethical considerations as an essential part of its methodology can create a space for grieving children to better understand the (inter)generational nature of their childhood grief experiences and to participate discursively in health promotion.
