Adventures in sex work: a pracademic's perspective in Switzerland

Lorena Molnar

Chapter 25 in Handbook of Sensitive Research in the Social Sciences, 2025, pp 371-383 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the methodological and ethical challenges of conducting criminological research on sex workers in Switzerland, a country where sex work is legalised. Reflecting on dual roles as a social worker and researcher, the narrative spans fieldwork from 2016 to 2024 with diverse sex worker populations in varied settings. The text underscores the necessity of flexible, ethical research practices and innovative methods to effectively engage and represent this stigmatised community. It highlights the importance of collaborations with practitioners and the sex work community. The chapter also addresses broader societal perceptions of sex work through a comparative study aimed at understanding victim-blaming attitudes. This reflective account aims to inform and inspire early-career researchers, emphasising participatory research approaches that respect and empower sex worker participants.
