Chapter 27 in Handbook of Sensitive Research in the Social Sciences, 2025, pp 403-417 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter provides guidance on carrying out research with young people into their alcohol consumption practices and experiences. To do so, we draw on the first author's research when exploring young people's (aged 15–24) alcohol consumption practices and experiences in two suburban locations in Manchester, UK. This chapter offers insight into the complexities of recruiting participants to take part in a study of this nature due to gatekeepers and signposts a number of culturally credible methods that can be presented to participants to ‘opt-in,’ which may appeal to the different preferences and personalities of young people in a study. We also highlight the need to be reflexive about the researcher's positionality, emphasising the need for ethical reflexivity throughout the research process, and suggest measures for ensuring the health and safety of the researcher ‘in the field.’ We conclude by arguing the need for participatory research designs and an openness to methodological adaptation, which can add value to our understanding of alcohol, drinking and drunkenness.
