Drawing as an arts-based method for researching sensitive topics

Jari Martikainen

Chapter 9 in Handbook of Sensitive Research in the Social Sciences, 2025, pp 132-146 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter focuses on drawing as an arts-based method for researching sensitive topics. First, the chapter outlines the scope of sensitive research, both in terms of issues that may be regarded as sensitive and vulnerable groups participating in research, and it discusses research ethics related to sensitive research. Thereafter, the chapter focuses on presenting the core principles and objectives of arts-based research as well as its potential for studying sensitive topics. Special attention is paid to drawing as an arts-based research method because it is characterised as a low-threshold method that offers ample possibilities for researchers to tailor the research design to meet the needs of diverse groups of people. Examples of prior studies using drawing as a means of researching sensitive topics among children and adolescents are presented. Finally, arts-based and drawing methods are conceptualised as methodological contact zones that provide participants with a means of connecting with their thoughts and emotions as well as bridging the past and present with future scenarios.
