Chapter 1 in Aristotle’s Economics, 2024, pp 1-5 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Aristotle, having studied for 20 years in Plato’s Academy, developed his own system of ideas. In manuscripts like the Ethics and the Politics, he combined abstract conjectures with real-world observation and experiment. While his debt to Plato retarded his own investigations, he may be counted nonetheless as the first social scientist and the first economist. His economics was built not on individual utility but on the collective interest and the social whole. This book demonstrates the consistency of his vision. It shows how much his synthesis differered from the reductionist approach to production, consumption, distribution and exchange.
