Chapter 9 in Aristotle’s Economics, 2024, pp 116-128 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Aristotle was not an anarchist. Like Hobbes and Locke, he believed that the political lead was essential to protect the social contract against the negative and predatory side of human nature. Fellowship, education, virtue and an adequate standard of living are not enough unsupported to preserve the social order. Society is a biological organism in which not all cells are in a position to pilot and plan. It is the role of the statesman backstopped by the philosopher to fill the gaps left by market failure and to resist any challenge to organic solidarity. State intervention would only succeed if the city-state remained relatively small, the right to citizenship were restricted and natural increase not allowed Malthus-like to undermine the median standard of living.
