Two worlds apart? Motives, forms and results of science-industry collaboration in cluster organisations - evidence from the Visegrad countries

Abstract: Since the beginning of the 21st century, cluster organisations have been established as elements of the innovation ecosystem in the Visegrad countries (Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia). Each country has designed and executed its own and unique cluster policy. Despite their individual approaches, in all countries, cluster organisations were tasked at quite an early stage with becoming platforms to build linkages between firms and universities (UNIVs)/research organisations (ROs) to increase the intensity of cooperation between them. This chapter aims to uncover and anatomise the motives, forms and results of science-industry collaboration in cluster organisations in the Visegrad countries. It also focuses on modelling the cooperation process between them based on data derived from desk research, individual semi-structured interviews with cluster organisation managers and a survey with representatives of UNIVs/ROs. The results of the study provide an understanding of the relationships established between business and research and the role which cluster organisations play as intermediaries between these two worlds.
