Grand challenges

Chapter 4.20 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 436-439 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Grand challenges have become an important topic of management research. Examples of grand challenges studied in management research include climate change, health care, “natural” disasters, poverty, social inequality and biosecurity. Since its first reference in our field in 2011, the meaning of grand challenge has evolved from one referring to a competition to solve a narrow, often technical problem towards one referring to more pervasive and less tractable societal issues. Grand challenge research in organisational scholarship is now at a crossroads. The lack of conceptual clarity around what we mean by grand challenges, the heterogeneity in our epistemological stances, and assumptions about how grand challenges should be addressed are all symptoms of an enthusiastic research field exploring pathways towards stronger theoretical and practical impact.
