Judgement

Demetris Hadjimichael and Igor Pyrko

Chapter 4.26 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 457-460 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Judgement can be broadly understood as an individual's evaluation of unfolding situations, actions, objects, and/or people. The concept of judgement is also widely applied to organisation and management scholarship, including debates on strategy. In SAP debates, judgement (often referred to with the synonyms of “phronesis” and/or “practical wisdom”) is used to problematise ethical issues in the pursuit of organisational strategies, as well as to understand that strategic judgement can be manifested and serve the materialisation of strategy in spontaneous rather than formal and deliberate ways. However, quite surprisingly, despite its relevance and significance, judgement (and its synonyms) has only been used as part of SAP in a handful of studies. Therefore, this section aims to frame the theoretical and methodological approaches to judgement in SAP, outline key themes and offer directions for future research to encourage engagement with this important concept in the SAP scholarship.
