Chapter 4.32 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 480-482 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) perspective views strategy as activities situated in organizational contexts, and multinational enterprises (MNEs) are an important organizational type with some distinctive features. Operating in multiple countries through a network of subsidiaries, it is a complex organization that involves strategy activities that stretch across different countries and need to accommodate institutional differences. Navigating arising strategy challenges can be usefully examined with a Strategy-as-Practice perspective. This entry focuses on five key areas of strategizing in MNEs where an SAP perspective seems most promising: strategy formulation, strategy implementation, strategic control, innovation and problem solving, and strategic leadership.
