Chapter 4.34 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 487-491 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Network as a phenomenon and a concept, referring to a web of relations among organizations, groups, or individuals and their activities, is immanent also in Strategy as Practice (SAP) research where scholars have taken interest in inter-organizational collaborations, intra-organizational social structures, and the intricate web of interactions shaping strategizing activities. From inter-organizational alliances and partnerships to informal social ties within organizational boundaries, networks are omnipresent in strategic management and organization studies. Scholars have explored the influence of networks on various strategic facets, including knowledge exchange, power dynamics, innovation, and the very process of strategy formation. Networks represent a relevant viewpoint for SAP especially via the notion of connectedness, reflecting the idea of relationality in strategy making which lies also in the core of practice-theoretical approaches.
