Chapter 4.39 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 508-509 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The term platform or digital ecosystem broadly refers to a group of interconnected and interacting network of entities that depend on each other's activities. Sub-topics that related studies have dealt with have included: ‘business ecosystems’ examining how firms deal with their environment, ‘innovation ecosystems’ analyzing how a particular innovation is developed and supported, and ‘platform ecosystems’ studying how entities organize themselves around a platform. Most studies have also focused on digital platforms as cases and data about platforms often relate to digital oriented businesses. Examples of digital platforms are Uber, Airbnb, and Amazon, who develop markets based on digital technologies so that buyers/customers can connect to sellers/suppliers.
