Project management

Siavash Alimadadi

Chapter 4.43 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 518-522 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In contemporary society, projects have emerged as a defining and widespread phenomenon, fundamentally reshaping collective action and economic structures. This shift from traditional hierarchical and stable organisational structures toward project-based activities stems from the evolution of capitalism, where rigid systems are increasingly replaced by more dynamic and adaptable forms of organisation that prioritise creativity, autonomy, and flexibility. The concept of the ‘project society’ further underscores the increasing significance of projects across various facets of our lives. These projects, characterised as temporary endeavours with specific goals, have ascended to prominence as a notable social arena for organised action, reflecting broader transformations in the way we work and interact. Recognising this prevalence offers a unique perspective for exploring the dynamics of collective action, highlighting the pivotal role that projects play in shaping social, economic, and organisational landscapes.
