Strategic communication

Loizos Heracleous

Chapter 4.49 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 538-539 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The emergence of strategic communication as a field in its own right has taken shape through specialized publications such as the International Journal of Strategic Communication launched in 2007 and the Routledge Handbook of Strategic Communication published in 2015. A functional approach to strategic communication would consider questions such as how to frame a message for different audiences, what are the most effective channels to employ, and how to track effectiveness of such communications. From an applied perspective, strategic communication is practiced in different functions such as political outreach, marketing and public relations. Communications are essential for the firm to effectively interrelate with its internal and external stakeholders. These communications can relate to multiple purposes within an organization's stakeholder management approach.
