Chapter 1.14 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 60-61 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Anthony Giddens stands alongside Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault as one of the defining developers of practice theory during the late 20th century. Two important themes in his work speak directly to central strands in Strategy as Practice research. First, Giddens’ concept of structuration is relevant to research on structural practices, giving them sufficient grip over human conduct to take them seriously, while also allowing for the possibility of choice and change. Second, his interest in identity is relevant to research on strategy practitioners, granting their identities the same combination of significance and plasticity as the practices with which they work. For researchers into practices, practitioners and, especially, practitioners’ roles in practice change, Giddens therefore provides important theoretical resources. It is not surprising that Giddens is the most frequently cited practice theorist in contemporary Strategy as Practice research.
