Strategy work

Chapter 4.62 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 583-585 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The notion of strategy work sits alongside other “work” developments in the social sciences; such as, craft work, institutional work and boundary work. The focus of this entry centres on how strategy work refers to describing and explaining how strategizing is accomplished. The turn to work that strategy work represents signals a sharp interest in what is going on when actors undertake the work that constitutes strategy in organizations. Locating strategy work alongside and complementary to strategy-as-practice research holds the promise of integrating shared concerns from related but differing perspectives, histories and assumptions. In focusing on developing our understanding of what strategy work is, our knowledge of strategy as an organizing force within organizations would be enhanced.
