Abstract:
Strategy workshops are commonplace in many organizations but managers often view them with scepticism. These events—sometimes known as strategy retreats, off-sites, or away-days—have become part of the corporate calendar because, so the logic goes, they provide a rare opportunity for managers to step away from daily operations to reflect on bigger strategic issues. They are viewed with scepticism because participants are often unclear about their purpose and are cynical about whether they have any lasting influence. Nonetheless, these enigmatic events have fascinated scholars, who have examined their roles as aids to strategic planning under uncertainty, as arenas for communication and coordination, and as ritualized events imbued with symbolic meaning. Recent research integrates practice and behavioural perspectives, yet key questions remain concerning the nature and function of strategy workshops.
