Pragmatism

Philippe Lorino and Benoît Journé

Chapter 5.14 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 654-658 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This entry aims to highlight the actual and potential connections between SAP and pragmatism. After presenting the key ideas of pragmatism, it shows that there are important convergences between the two perspectives, particularly their processual perspective and focus on practical experience. Such convergences may pave the way to the development of a fruitful “pragmatist perspective” on SAP, requiring specific clarifications on both sides with regard to such notions as “practice”, “strategy”, or “situation”. More precisely, a pragmatist approach to SAP would emphasize four features: experimental inquiry (the necessary validation of new practices and new concepts requires experimentation); situation (the disruptive potential of situations recommends a “heedful” attention to signs that, at any moment, may require the redefinition of the situation); valuation (rather than the transcendental fixation of values that would depart from the movement of inquiry, overlook and constrain it, strategizing involves the ongoing and situated construction of value judgments); pluralism (the pluralist dialogue between the groups concerned by the contemplated action is not only a political and ethical, but also an epistemic requirement, since it contributes to renewing comprehension, avoiding cognitive traps, and innovating).
