SAP in India

Biswatosh Saha and Naveen Goyal

Chapter 6.8 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 695-697 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: SAP-in-India has had a slow evolution. The early works of SAP scholars in Europe and the Wittgenstenian inspiration of the ‘practice turn’ in Wittgenstein's ‘Philosophical Investigations’ provided the language tools and the conceptual confidence to the first author of the note to take a ‘leap of faith’ and zoom into the Indian specificities of strategy as ‘practiced’ in organizations in the local context. The early results of the gradually expanding corpus of work have slowly brought to light the power of SAP in bottom-up articulation of strategy problems and ‘lived strategizing practices’ in contexts that differ economically, socially and culturally from the archetypical North American strategy settings. SAP in India has the potential today of, not only contributing to the global theoretical understanding of strategy, but also helping the discourse on strategy in India to decolonize itself by examining its own strategy practices with a newfound theoretical confidence.
