Chapter 1.19 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 78-81 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Henry Mintzberg is one of the pioneering management scholars who has extensively researched the strategising processes of firms. Therefore, Mintzberg can be regarded as a seminal figure in Strategy as Practice (SAP). Interestingly, the debate on the influence of eminent strategy process thinkers such as Mintzberg, Andrew Pettigrew, and others has been mostly absent from the SAP literature. Two notable exceptions are Whittington's (2007) brief analysis of Mintzbergian studies to discuss the overlap between the strategy process and the SAP bodies of literature and Kohtamaki et al.'s (2022) review of the analytical structure of the SAP field, listing Mintzberg and Pettigrew as the leading figures of the strategy process cluster that is closely connected to other SAP research clusters (praxis, sensemaking, discursive, socio-material, and institutional). This entry on Mintzberg's influence on SAP theory and research aims to address this neglect.
