Phenomenology

Chapter 1.21 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 87-91 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
A key philosophical underpinning of practice theory is phenomenology. The purpose of this entry is to outline briefly the basic features of phenomenology, highlight some of its key insights regarding the nature of knowledge and reality, and suggest how phenomenology offers resources to address current critiques of SAP as well as open up new avenues for SAP research. As an overall orientation, it should be noted from the outset that phenomenology is not a distinct philosophical school, but rather a particular philosophical method for studying phenomena—specifically, how the world appears to us in our lived experience. The phenomenological insights concerning the nature of knowing and being are likely to play an important role in addressing the critique of SAP, which calls for greater theoretical engagement in addition to rich empirical analysis. The phenomenological insights are particularly relevant to address critiques aimed at SAP, such as those highlighting its ambiguous epistemological and ontological foundations.
