Chapter 1.24 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 101-104 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The “site ontology” developed by Theodore Schatzki provides a foundational “grand theory” for understanding the interplay between human activity and the social sphere. Doing so, Schatzki positions practices at the core of his ontology. Practices are what make up the intelligibility of the human being in a given situation. This main idea is inspired by Wittgenstein's and Heidegger's philosophy and differentiates his account of practice theory from Bourdieu's theory of “habitus” and Giddens’ theory of “structuration.” Though a general social theorist, his work regularly draws on organizations as an example and has been frequently used in organizational theory and strategy-as-practice research.
