Structuration theory

Tamim Elbasha

Chapter 1.26 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 109-111 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Giddens’ theory of structuration (ToS) emerged between the late 1970s and the mid 1980s, standing out for its concept of the ‘duality of structure’. This theory critically engaged with the traditional social thinking at the time by addressing the issue of dualism in sociology – the tendency to emphasize either human agency or social structure in isolation, portraying them as conflicting aspects of social existence. Giddens proposes a different approach by integrating agency and structure, stressing their interdependence. Structuration theory has been very influential for SAP research as, for example, we can trace in the practices/praxis/practitioners foundational framework where attention is paid to both people and their social context.
